Q: What Happened?
A: HUSD switched from GroupWise to Gmail on June 7 2014.
Q: What is Google Apps for Education?
A: It is a free, web-based service provided by Google that offers many online applications, such as email, calendar, contacts, online file storage, document creation (word processing, spreadsheets, slides), and instant messaging.
Q: How do I sign in to Google Apps?
Q: Will I be able to access my email over the summer break?
A: Of course! You can access your email at google.com from anywhere.
Q: Will my email address change?
A: Yes and No. You now have a new email address firstname.lastname@example.org and will log in using this address but will also keep recieiving mail @hemetusd.k12.ca.us. We have no plans to remove the old email address so you do not need to immediately change your business cards, letterhead or syllibi. You will log in to Gmail using email@example.com. You cannot log in using firstname.lastname@example.org.
Q: What is my password? What if my password isn't working?
A: If you had used Google Apps or Haiku recently, you should know your password. If you have not used your Google account in several months or have never used it at all, we have set your password to the same password you use to log in to your work computer. This is called your Novell password or Network password. It is NOT your GroupWise password, unless they happen to match.
If that doesn't work, you can try welcome. If you still cannot log in, please contact the Technology Help Desk at 951-765-5100 x5580 so that we may assist you.
Q: How do I switch over my mobile device?
A: On your mobile phone you will need to delete your existing HUSD email profile and add a new one following these directions.
Q: What happened to all of my mail, appointments, etc?
A: All email, calendars and contacts have been migrated from GroupWise to Gmail. If you believe something is missing from your account that should have migrated, please contact the Help Desk and let us know.
Q: What was migrated? Have I lost anything?
A: Nearly everything has been migrated including:
What wont be migrated:
Q: Do I have to stop using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)?
A: Absolutely not. You can still use these programs as you always have. Use of Google’s productivity apps is completely optional. Google Apps does have some awesome collaboration features that work very well with Haiku and allow easy document sharing and collaboration with students and staff.
Q: What help will be available?
A: We have multiple options available:
Q: What are the benefits of Google Apps?
A: Moving to Google Apps will dramatically increase the level of service we can offer - more storage space, reliability and functionality - without incurring any additional costs. Also, as a web-based service it works more consistently across different platforms and devices.
This change will also give staff and students access to more advanced web-based collaboration services, such as Google Docs (allowing multiple users to create, share, and edit documents, spreadsheets and slide presentations in real time). Google Apps offers 30GB of storage per user, far more than what we can currently offer staff and students.
